After years of turmoil, the Indian mining sector appears to be on a turnaround path with production of metallic minerals growing by nearly 20% in the first eleven months of 2015-16 and total mineral output rising by 8.2%. In terms of value, the mineral output is lower this year compared to that of the previous year, down by 11.4% between April 2015 and February 2016 as compared to the same period a year ago. This is attributed to the fall in international prices. Within the mining sector, the biggest growth in output was seen in chromite (36.1%), lead concentrate (33.7%), copper concentrate (31%) and Bauxite (27.4%). Non-metallic minerals output grew 2.1% in the first eleven months of 2015-16, with phosphorite production rising nearly 12% and limestone growing over 2%.
