Chemical Companies in Japan Placing Their Stakes on Bioplastics

Several major chemical companies in Japan such as Mitsubishi Chemical and Dainichiseika Color & Chemicals Manufacturing are placing their weight behind highly functional bioplastics as a promising alternative to petrochemical plastics and also in a bid to meet the growing demand for environment friendly material. However, there are concerns regarding the practical uses of biomass derived from organisms, as obtaining raw materials may lead to food supply problems. Thus, the use of inedible biomass to ensure stable feedstock supply is anticipated.
