The bauxite operators in Pahang, Kaula Lampur, have submitted a memorandum to the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry urging the authorities to resume bauxite mining as soon as the moratorium expires on April 15 this year. As the bauxite mining operators have followed the standard operating procedures including matters related to pollution and cleanliness, they are hopeful that the moratorium will not be extended. The Minerals Department had audited the mining locations and found them to be satisfactory. The government had imposed a three-month moratorium with effect from January 15 this year, to tackle the problem of pollution caused by bauxite mining in Pahang. The Natural Resources and Environment Minister had said that the moratorium would be extended if the bauxite industry did not comply with all the guidelines, including the removal of bauxite reserves and creation of an integrated storage area and bauxite residue cleaning system.
